IN-HOUSE PROJECTS:    Integrated Hybrid Technologies is the Research and Development Division of Above the Waterline.    

Our in-house projects all have one thing in common - efficiency - how we can use our resources for a better, more sustainable future.   

We believe that a hybrid approach is necessary to speed the transition to renewables.   As renewables become more efficient and effective, they will gradually phase out fossil fuels.    Today, even electric cars are hybrid whenever they are plugged into the grid, because the grid is hybrid.     

Our other big focus is saving energy through conservation.    Replacing a 25 h.p. diesel with a 7 h.p. solar electric powered motor is one example.   Another is improving the aerodynamics of cars, pickup trucks  and SUV's with improved aerodynamics.      

Great Craftsmanship, that stands the test of time, is very ecological.    Carbon Footprints are best measured over and amortized over time.   When objects last longer, they have less carbon footprint per year.    By making our equipment to last 100 years with proper maintenance and support, we reduce the carbon footprint of the job at hand per year, by eliminating building a replacement.    Thus Great Craftsmanship is very ecological.

IHT is also the place to go to for your custom project.    All of the money we get from our Custom Projects is funneled into the general fund used to develop our in-house projects.

A History of Implementing Technology


Our Parent Company, Above the Waterline, Ltd., has been developing and implementing cutting edge hybrid technology for 20 years.    Our Electric Propulsion Systems under the trade names Electroprop and Propulsion Marine have been in use for years all over the world.   We pioneered the modern ultra efficient Permanent Magnet Brushless Gear Driven Technology.  We have been setting standards in safety and efficiency.    Our products have lead the way to a revolution in how sailboats can be powered by the sun, wind and generators.    

Integrated Hybrid Technologies has been started as a division of Above the Waterline for the purpose of bringing these technologies into mass adoption, both in the marine sector and to all other sectors.  Our systems can provide energy for off grid housing, 3rd world villages, industrial and office buildings, farm machinery and implements, and any other application requiring energy and motion.   

Efficiency is the enabler of this technology and is at the heart of every one of our electrical machines.

R and D Services - From Concept to Prototype to Production

We start with a thorough analysis of your idea and how we can help you bring it to life.    

Our first principles approach to design looks at all the possibilities of design including shape, size, materials, suppliers, efficiencies, cost effectiveness, production simplicity, but most important of all, how well the product integrates into its environment.      

Together we create the idea on Solidworks.  This Computer Modeling program allows us to create a virtual prototype.   This can include articulating or rotating parts.     Many ideas can be tested out on the computer and kept or discarded based on their merits and how they integrate with the entire project and its application.

The Virtual Prototype is then used to create drawings from which we build a working prototype to be further analyzed in operation.    Once that prototype is fully tested, we build Serial Number One.  
   
Our custom projects have included everything from complete hybrid energy systems for boats, to restorations, to custom fiberglass molds and parts, housing concepts and yacht designs.    We work with a variety of specialists to satisfy any government requirements.    

We can then follow through with all the drawings, methods for building, tooling, process of assembly,  owners manuals and marketing documentation.

We will entertain projects from individual needs to mass production.

We have a suite of energy efficient projects that are ready for production.   

Included in a production package is Serial Number One, plus all the plans, drawings, software and manuals needed to take these products into production.   Many of our products have been thoroughly tested and in operation for many years and have been thoroughly upgraded after extensive user feedback.    

Our in-house projects are based on energy efficiency - including electric engines, generators, energy storage, diagnostics, and aerodynamic fairings.  

Each of our designs have an intuitive user interface.   Simplicity is at the core of our design philosophy.   We constantly strive to make our products easy to install, operate and understand.    

Our systems are as maintenance free as possible.  We constantly strive to make easy access to any maintenance item.   Cost of ownership is a prime consideration in all of our designs.    

Our products are available with or without our ongoing participation.   We prefer to see products built and used in the same area, so we can provide an agreement that is protective of your area of operations.    

All of our energy projects can be run on multiple green energy sources.  Our hybrid philosophy applies to all energy sources.   Seamless integration into your application is our specialty.

Hybrid Energy


Anything that moves requires energy.    That energy can come from a single source, but more often energy comes from a variety of sources.   As soon as energy comes from two or more sources, it is said to be hybrid.    

Take for example an electric car, which gets its energy from the grid.   The grid is a hybrid of many different energy sources.  Its easy to find out where the energy is coming from with a quick google search.    It could be solar, wind, or hydro, but its likely getting a fair amount of energy from fossil fuels or nuclear.   Fact is, we live in a hybrid world.   

What differentiates energy sources is where they are produced.   Is the production of energy on site, or is it remote, or is it both.   We believe that energy is best if it can come from any viable energy source.     This provides the user with more options, and that can be the difference whether the power is on or off.   Having multiple sources of energy allows for harvesting of energy cost effectively, and from the best source at that time.   

Integrating Hybrid Energy and using Energy Efficiently is what Integrated Hybrid Technologies is all about.    We live in a universe with unlimited energy, - its our access to that energy that is limited.     Protecting energy sources is also key to our philosophy.   Most of our products are built in Faraday's cages, to protect against sunstorm or lightning events.    

Our goal is to provide the most reliable energy possible for any given application, and to do that in an efficient and safe manner by employing technology that has been proven over time and extensive testing in some of the harshest environments we know of.

Integrated Hybrid Technology

Integration


Integration is fundamental to all products.  Even a stand alone product integrates with its user through a user interface.   

All energy products integrate into a system that includes at minimum and energy source.   That energy source could be batteries which have must be recharged by a charger.   So in its simplest form you have a motor that is integrated electrically to a battery and charger, and mechanically to its load.   To get the best possible usage of any energy product, integration needs to be optimized.   

Battery Applications need to be integrated with their loads, with low voltage cutoffs, and with their chargers with high voltage cutouts.   Safeguards are put into place so that load currents don't exceed battery current capabilities.     A well engineered system integrates everything together.   A good example of this is the electric car, which through various sensors and computers keeps the operating components within their operating parameters.    An electric car is a fully integrated system. 

When a customer buys a single product, integration of that product with other products is left up to the customer.   Often times, that customer has no previous experience with integration of the product with the various systems.  This introduces risk into the installation.    

Integrated Hybrid Technologies ( IHT ) goal is to reduce or eliminate the risk of integration of products into systems by:

-  selling fully integrated, ready to install systems
-  providing products for Integration, for example DC Distribution Panels 
-  providing extensive technical support
-  installing systems by our own trained installers
-  training on installation methods and protocols.
-  educational materials.    

Integration is important to the overall safety, longevity, knowledge and user friendly operation of any system. 
  

Helping to Speed the Transition to Renewables

Fossil Fuels can be utilized more efficiently when adapted to high efficiency hybrid drivetrains.   Engine Idling can be eliminated after warmup.    Internal Combustion Engines can be run at their peak efficiency while electric motors can be run at all other times very efficiently.    Hybrid Powertrains are forward compatible with Renewable Energy Sources.    Hybrid Powertrains will get smaller and lighter in the future.      The biggest advancements will come in reducing the size and power density of generators, and reducing the size and energy density of batteries.    Electric motors are already very compact and very efficient and forward compatible with new energy sources and new energy storage systems.
